FAQ
What is "soap free" soap?
Soap that is marketed as "soap free" soap
is not actually soap, but a detergent. Its cleansing properties are
gained by the surfactants used in their ingredients. (Very similar to dish
washing detergent). "Soap free" soap can be liquid or bar and are known as
"syndet" (synthetic detergent) soap.
Are all of your ingredients natural?
Yes. All of the ingredients used to make
transparent soap are in a natural form. Please see our Ingredients Page.
Is your soap suitable for using on my face?
Yes. Our
soap has proven to be beneficial to users that have sensitive skin or who suffer from skin disorders. It is mild
enough to use on your face as a cleanser and will not leave skin feeling
dry or tight. Males even use it as an alternative to shave cream.
Some clients also use the soap to wash their hair - it lathers
tremendously.
What is the pH value of your
soap?
Our soap's pH value varies form batch
to batch and is measured between 8 and 9.5.
How is soap commercially manufactured?
Over the past decades, the majority of commercial manufacturers of soap
using large scale methods, have utilised modern technology to create soap which
is faster, cheaper, using lower quality ingredients, producing a lower quality
yet longer lasting product. The soapmaking oils are heated in large
vats to high temperatures, destroying their beneficial components and mixed
with lye, resulting in saponification. The moisturising glycerine is then
extracted from the soap and sold as a revenue-raising by-product. The soap
is then milled, and synthetic additives such as colours, preservatives and
perfumes are added. It is then rolled and plodded to ensure thorough
blending and uniformity. It is then ejected from the large plodders, cut
into bar size and stamped into it's final shape. (Note - A few years ago there
was a terrible accident at a commercial soap manufacturer in India,
where 5 workplace health and safety officers were killed when they all slipped
and fell into a large vat of boiling oil).
How is Ahla Naturelle's handmade soap different from
commercially manufactured transparent soap?
The oils are only heated
to the temperature required for saponification, maintaining their beneficial
qualities. The glycerine is retained in the soap and more glycerine
added ensuring maximum moisturising abilities. Only 100% pure
essential oils are used to fragrance the soap, adding their valuable healing
properties as well as a beautiful scent. Only natural preservatives
(sucrose, glycerine and ethanol) are added, not synthetic ones.
Why does transparent soap diminish faster than
opaque soap?
Because of the presence of natural additives, a
transparent bar of soap only contains 50 - 60% of actual soap in contrast to
opaque soap that contains 80 - 90%. This accounts for its exceptional
mildness and why it is beneficial and non-drying to people with sensitive
skin.
